Backpack Exchange has appointed Nathan Smith as Chief Operating Officer (COO). He will manage daily operations, improve cross departmental teamwork and help the company grow as it expands its global financial platform.
At Backpack, Smith has been key in launching and growing the company’s exchange and wallet systems, supporting trading, custody, and on-chain services. As COO, he will manage operations, coordinate leadership, and ensure smooth execution as the company expands worldwide.
This appointment follows Mark Wetjen, former CFTC leader, joining as President of Backpack US. It is part of the company’s plan to strengthen its leadership team across key areas.
Smith brings years of experience in building systems that connect blockchain technology with large financial platforms. He previously worked at Coinbase as a technical lead, focusing on network development.

He helped design blockchain indexing and wallet systems and played a key role in adding Solana support. His work helped Coinbase grow beyond Ethereum and build a strong base for global multi-chain expansion.
Smith’s appointment shows Backpack’s focus on building a strong leadership team with clear roles across the business. CEO Armani Ferrante said the company now needs to scale its organisation as carefully as its products, and that Smith has already proven his leadership by turning complex ideas into successful products and teams. Making him COO helps the company grow faster as it expands globally.
Smith said Backpack’s strength lies in its ability to work quickly in complex, regulated environments. In his new role, he will focus on creating better systems and processes to support that speed across the company. As Backpack enters new markets and builds new products, he is excited to help support its next stage of growth.
