Why We Started Lifeguard
Like many people, I once believed I was too savvy to fall for a scam. But then I got an text that looked like it came from a new colleague, asking me to purchase gift cards for a company All Hands employee appreciation event. The request felt urgent, the details seemed credible, and though the request felt odd, I am embarrassed to admit I got way to far along before I realized what was happening.
That moment hit hard. If I could get fooled, even while working in tech, and knowing the risks, how much more vulnerable are people like my mom, my grandparents, or friends who don’t live behind their dual monitors all day?
The truth is, online scams are exploding in scale and sophistication. Cybercrime is expected to cost the world over $23 trillion by 2027, up from $8.4 trillion in 2022. Older adults are targeted four times more often than other groups, facing devastating emotional and financial consequences.
And yet, most existing cybersecurity tools weren’t built for people, they were built for businesses. They’re reactive, complicated, and leave consumers behind.
That’s the gap we set out to fill when we started Lifeguard.
