OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap Steps Down; Fidji Simo Takes Medical Leave

OpenAI’s COO is moving to a new role, and two other top executives are taking leave for health reasons, marking a major leadership change as the company prepares for a possible stock market debut this year.

While Simo is on leave, OpenAI cofounder and president Greg Brockman will lead the product team. Other executives, including Jason Kwon, Sarah Friar, and Dresser, will also help manage her responsibilities during this time.

Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s longtime COO, will move into a new role leading special projects and will report directly to CEO Sam Altman. He will focus on expanding the company’s business software sales through partnerships with private equity firms. Denise Dresser, the new chief revenue officer, will take over some of his previous responsibilities.

Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch is stepping down to focus on recovering from cancer and plans to return later in a smaller role. The company is now looking for a new CMO. Fidji Simo, who leads AGI development, will also take a short medical leave for treatment and plans to return soon.

These changes come at an important time for OpenAI as it prepares for a possible IPO and recently raised $122 billion at a high valuation. The company is also working to increase revenue, including adding ads to ChatGPT, while facing strong competition from Google and Anthropic.

The maker of ChatGPT, OpenAI, has seen several leadership changes before. After Sam Altman was briefly removed in late 2023 the company faced multiple high profile exits. After it expanded and strengthened its leadership team by bringing in experienced executives in marketing, finance and operations.

Simo shared that she has been managing postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome throughout her career and had delayed medical tests and treatments to stay focused on work. After recently taking time off for tests, she realized she had pushed herself too hard and now plans to try new treatments to manage her health better.

“OpenAI said it has a strong leadership team focused on key goals like advancing research, growing its global user base of nearly 1 billion people, and supporting business use. The company added that it is well prepared to continue moving forward smoothly.”

“Simo said the timing is frustrating because the team is working on exciting plans, and she doesn’t want to miss any part of it. However, she added that the company is in good hands with a strong leadership team ready to step in.”
