Novity Receives Strategic Investment From Acario Innovation

May 21, 2026 | By Startuprise io

Novity, a San Francisco-based company that provides a predictive maintenance platform for process industries, has received a strategic investment from Acario Innovation, the venture capital arm of Tokyo Gas.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the investment follows earlier funding from Myriad Ventures and WERU Investment.

The investment will help Novity expand its TruPrognostics platform, a software solution that combines AI and physics-based technology, originally developed at Xerox PARC in Silicon Valley.

The platform helps detect problems early in industrial equipment and provides advanced warnings for machines such as compressors, pumps, fans, and induction motors.

Natural gas operations depend heavily on equipment that runs continuously, often 24/7. When critical machines fail or experience unexpected downtime, it can create serious safety risks, interrupt supply, and lead to major financial losses and higher operating costs. For processing and compression equipment used to increase gas pressure before pipeline transport, downtime costs can exceed $500,000 per hour.

Novity’s AI technology helps companies detect equipment problems early and improve reliability, safety and maintenance efficiency. The platform has already helped Fortune 500 energy operators reduce failures and avoid costly disruptions through accurate early warnings.

Although Tokyo Gas primarily serves customers in Japan, the company has steadily expanded its upstream energy operations worldwide, especially in the United States. Through its subsidiary Tokyo Gas Natural Resources (TGNR), the company has become one of the largest producers in the Haynesville Shale following its 2025 Chevron joint venture and the 2022 acquisition of Rockcliff Energy.

Most of these projects use gas fired turbines, which need to operate reliably to provide consistent onsite power. Novity’s technology is designed to improve stability and uptime for these assets, including hybrid power systems that combine gas turbines with battery storage.

Novity aims to help process industries move away from fixed maintenance schedules, starting with oil and gas infrastructure. Its platform combines physics-based models, machine learning, and AI to detect early signs of equipment problems, provide useful insights for maintenance teams, and help prevent unexpected downtime.

"This investment reflects a shared conviction that AI-based predictive maintenance is now a foundational capability for critical energy infrastructure through the supply chain," said Markus Larsson, Co-Founder and CEO at Novity. "We're aligned on evaluating high-impact equipment use cases — starting with compression — where earlier detection and Remaining Useful Life Prognostics materially improve uptime and operational performance."

"Improving reliability and operational efficiency across a diverse asset base is one of our core priorities," said Kenji Maeda, CEO at Acario. "Predictive maintenance has historically been difficult to achieve, but we believe that with Novity's hybrid AI solution, plant managers don't just get anomaly alerts and alarms, but instead an actionable fault diagnosis and a precise failure timeline, often providing the ability to act months before issues arise.. We believe Novity is a powerful solution to address maintenance challenges in this regard, with the potential to support a wide range of industrial customers operating equipment in both field and factory environments."

About Novity

Founded in 2022 by Markus Larsson, Novity provides AI powered predictive maintenance solutions for energy and process industries. Its TruPrognostics platform combines physics-based models, machine learning, and AI to detect equipment faults, predict remaining useful life, and recommend maintenance actions for industrial machinery. The platform leverages existing customer data, and has achieved diagnostic accuracy above 90% across oil and gas, LNG and wastewater operations.
