SiTration, a materials recovery company, secures $11.8million in seed funding. 2150 led the investment, including participation from Orion Industrial Ventures, BHP Ventures, and Extantia. Azolla Ventures, a prior investment, and the E14 Fund, which is connected to MIT, were also involved.

With the money, the business plans to scale up its innovative method of recovering important metals and minerals and roll out trial projects with business partners.

SiTration, an MIT spin-out led by CEO Dr Brendan Smith, has developed a patented porous silicon membrane technology that combines electrical conductivity, highly adjustable pore shape, and ultra-durability to enable effective and affordable materials recovery.

Its method can be used to recover resources from sources that were previously unreachable, such as waste, and can replace conventional resource-intensive mining processes.

The company is implementing its membrane platform in metals refining, lithium-ion battery recycling, and mining. It has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy’s ARPA-E programme.

About SiTration

SiTration’s silicon membrane enables ultra-efficient separations in the most demanding environments. Their technology is being deployed with commercial partners in the mining and Li-ion battery recycling industries to unlock low-cost and sustainable recovery of critical materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper.
