280 Earth, which was established in 2022, is dedicated to the scaling up and commercialization of innovative direct air capture technology that was developed at X, The Moonshot Factory (Google X). The initial phase of the commercial demonstration facility is intended to extract up to 500 tonnes of CO2 and water from ambient air annually.

The captured CO2 will be liquified and sequestered off-site or utilised in a variety of industrial processes, while the corresponding water can be utilised for chilling or other purposes. The facility is extensively instrumented to verify the technology’s scale-up plans as it transitions to a 5,000-tonne-per-year module.

By utilising electricity with a very low carbon content, primarily from hydropower on the local infrastructure, its direct air capture installation optimises environmental benefits. In addition, the low-temperature desorption process employed by 280 Earth can reduce energy consumption by utilising waste heat from nearby third-party industrial operations. The facility’s equipment is primarily manufactured by American-based vendors and is being assembled with a substantial amount of union labour.

About 280 Earths

In 2022, 280 Earth was established with the objective of commercialising and expanding the innovative direct air capture technology that was developed at X, The Moonshot Factory (Google X). 280 Earth’s proprietary process is distinguished by its cost-effective continuous flow process, which captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere, low energy consumption, the capacity to utilise waste heat from a diverse array of industrial processes, and the positive generation of pure water that is captured from the air.
