The U.S. depends heavily on foreign supply chains for battery materials, creating risks for industries such as electric vehicles, drones and other critical technologies. China currently dominates the battery anode supply chain, so trade disputes or supply disruptions could affect production across many sectors.
Sila developed a silicon-carbon (Si/C) anode technology that delivers 20% to 40% higher energy density than traditional graphite. This allows batteries to be smaller, lighter, charge faster, and last longer. By combining its US developed technology with large-scale manufacturing in the United States, Sila aims to strengthen the country's battery supply chain and reduce reliance on overseas suppliers.
Sila completed construction of its Moses Lake facility and began operations in fall 2025. The company is now increasing production at the plant.
Built on a 160-acre site, the facility started with a Phase 1 capacity of 2 GWh and is designed to expand to as much as 250 GWh over the next five years, making it the world's largest silicon anode production plant. As production grows, Sila expects to create hundreds of well-paying jobs and support the local economy in Washington State.
“Silas transition from a groundbreaking material science inventor to a gigascale manufacturing company is a masterclass in American operational discipline,” commented Vic Miller Sutter Hill Ventures. We have watched them translate laboratory breakthroughs into reality, proving that the leap from the lab to the factory floor is not only essential , but achievable in the United States with the right technology and team.”
“This funding allows us to scale our operations further and deliver on the promise of American innovation, strengthen the foundation of our domestic manufacturing capabilities and ensure that critical industries have a secure and reliable supply of advanced batteries,” said Gene Berdichevsky, Sila Co-Founder and CEO.
