Disney to Lay Off 1,000 Employees Across Company

Apr 15, 2026 | By Startuprise io

The Walt Disney Company announced this week that it is cutting about 1,000 jobs to “streamline operations,” according to a memo from CEO Josh D’Amaro. The layoffs will impact employees across Disney’s businesses, including studios, TV networks, sports and experiences.

One of the hardest-hit divisions is Marvel, which is cutting jobs in both New York and Burbank across film, TV, comics, franchise, finance, and legal teams. This includes most of Marvel Studios' award-winning visual development team.

These artists and designers helped shape the look of Marvel films and shows like The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Daredevil, with many having worked at the company for over a decade.

Nearly the entire department has been laid off, leaving only a small core team to manage hiring on a project-by-project basis. Reports of the layoffs began spreading on Tuesday through public and private channels.

Some visual development artists will move from full-time roles to contractors on individual projects. The layoffs come during a wider wave of job cuts across the entertainment, advertising, video game, and media industries.

Disney last had major layoffs in 2022, shortly after Bob Iger returned as CEO, when it cut around 8,000 jobs. As of late 2025, the company had about 230,000 employees.

In a memo to employees, D’Amaro said, “I know this is hard. These decisions are not a reflection of their work or the company’s strength. They are part of our ongoing effort to manage resources better and reinvest in the business.”

“Over the past few months, we’ve been looking for ways to streamline parts of the company so we can continue delivering the creativity and innovation Disney is known for,” D’Amaro said in a memo. “Because our industry is changing quickly, we need to regularly review how to build a more flexible, tech-enabled workforce for the future.”
