Defense Tech Startup Kapta Space Secures $24M in Series A Funding

Kapta Space, a Seattle, WA-based provider of a spaceborne radar payload platform, has secured $24 million in a Series A funding round, bringing the total amount to $30 million.

The round was led by Washington Harbour Partners and Bison Ventures, with participation from MetaVC, MYDA Capital, Entrada Ventures, Aurelia Foundry, and Fitz Gate Ventures.

The company will use the funding to scale production, expand manufacturing capacity, qualify its radar payload for flight, and prepare for its first orbital demonstration.

What is Kapta Space?

Kapta Space develops advanced radar payloads for satellites used in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Its technology is designed to detect and track moving targets across air, sea, and land from space.

The company has developed a modular radar architecture called the Metamaterial Electronically Scanned Array (MESA). This software-defined system is designed to deliver radar capabilities with lower costs, power requirements, and manufacturing complexity than traditional active electronically scanned array (AESA) systems.

Kapta's technology uses rapid electronic beam steering and a wide field of regard to help satellites search for targets, track their movement, and revisit areas as needed.

Why the Funding Matters

Kapta Space will use the funding to increase production of its radar technology to support multiple classified moving target indication contracts.

The company also plans to expand manufacturing capacity, qualify its payload for flight, and prepare for its first orbital demonstration.

These investments will support the development and deployment of radar systems designed to help satellite operators detect and track moving targets over wide areas.

Who founded Kapta Space?

Kapta Space was founded in 2023 by Milton Perque and Adam Bily. The company is headquartered in Seattle, Washington.

The founders established the company to develop electronically steered radar payloads for next-generation space-based intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and tracking missions.

"The mission calls for persistent awareness, and that requires us to rethink how radar has to work at constellation scale," said Milton Perque, Founder and CEO of Kapta Space. "Traditional architectures are cost-prohibitive and were never designed for the scale these missions now demand.

Market and Business Growth

Kapta Space has secured multiple classified moving target indication contracts, according to the funding announcement.

Its radar technology is designed to support national security missions that require detection and tracking of moving targets across air, sea, and land. The company's payloads are also intended to support wide-area tracking and high-resolution SAR imaging from low Earth orbit.

The latest funding will help Kapta scale production and prepare its technology for flight qualification and its first orbital demonstration.

What Happens Next?

Kapta Space plans to expand manufacturing, increase production to support its classified contracts, and qualify its radar payload for flight.

The company will also prepare for its first orbital demonstration as it works to deploy its radar technology for space-based surveillance and tracking missions.
