Maia Farms, a firm committed to using mycelium to improve the world's protein supply, raises $2.3 million for pre-seed investment. Joyful Ventures, PIC Group, and Koan Capital led the round, with angel investors from the Creative Destruction Lab also participating.

The Canadian Food Innovation Network, the National Research Council of Canada, the SFU BC Centre for Agritech Innovation, MITACS, and the Canadian Space Agency provided grant support to the firm in addition to the equity investment.

Using bioreactor technology, Maia Farms is a food technology firm founded in 2021 by Gavin Schneider, Ashton Ostrander, and Dr. Sean Lacoursire. The company produces protein components based on mushrooms and mycelium, which enhances the flavour and texture of food items.

With the money, the firm plans to expand operations, quicken the pace of research and development, and broaden the market for CanProTM, a range of accessible and sustainable protein ingredients derived from mushrooms and vegetables.
