ChronicleBio, a data-driven techbio company that uses multi-omics and artificial intelligence, has appointed John Mumm as its Chief Scientific Officer.
Mumm brings more than 30 years of experience in immunology, drug development, and biotechnology. A serial founder, inventor, and author of more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, he holds multiple patents. He will help advance ChronicleBio’s mission to understand better and develop treatments for diseases that have long been considered difficult to explain or treat.
Mumm joins ChronicleBio's Head of Platform, Yambazi Banda, Ph.D., an expert in computational biology with experience ranging from particle physics research at Oxford to leading large-scale genomics projects at UCSF and Ancestry.com.
Together, they will lead the company's scientific efforts as ChronicleBio develops technology aimed at improving the understanding and treatment of neuroimmune conditions such as ME/CFS, Long COVID and POTS, with the goal of moving beyond traditional trial-and-error approaches to medicine.

Mumm brings extensive experience in cytokine biology, immunology, and precision medicine to ChronicleBio. He founded and previously served as CEO of Deka Biosciences where he developed the Diakine® platform a technology designed to create targeted therapies that help regulate immune responses in cancer and inflammatory diseases.
Under his leadership, Deka Biosciences moved quickly from startup to clinical development, receiving FDA clearance for a Phase 1 clinical trial within 18 months of its Series A funding. The company also completed a 39-patient basket trial in just 12 months.
ChronicleBio was founded on the belief that one of the biggest challenges in chronic disease research is the lack of effective patient stratification. When patients with different underlying biological conditions are grouped, clinical trial results can be inconsistent, making it difficult to identify which treatments truly work. To address this, the company focuses on identifying biologically similar patient groups before treatment begins.
Its multi-omics platform combines data from whole-genome sequencing, epigenetics, RNA sequencing, immune profiling, proteomics, and metabolomics to better understand disease mechanisms. This approach helps determine which therapies are most likely to benefit specific patients. It may also identify existing clinical-stage drugs that could help those who do not respond to current treatments.
Over the past year, Yambazi Banda has helped build the scientific and technology foundation of ChronicleBio. A Rhodes Scholar with a D.Phil. in Particle Physics from Oxford, he has held research and leadership roles at UCSF, Ancestry.com, and Ambys Medicines, where he worked on genomics, population genetics, and gene and cell therapy programs.
Banda brings expertise in statistics, computational biology and translational science. He also previously served as Executive Director of Spectrum Biobank, a nonprofit focused on improving diversity in genetic research. At ChronicleBio, he continues to support inclusive science through the company's biobank initiatives, and external partnerships.
"When you combine fast-paced technology, both compute infrastructure and algorithm development, with a highly invested group of individuals, barriers to success diminish quickly. What we've managed to build at ChronicleBio in only one year is evidence of genuine dedication to help find health solutions," Banda said.

"I have conducted research in various fields of science from particle physics to statistical genetics and computational biology with the goal of helping answer some of humanity's pressing questions. The work being done at ChronicleBio, however, inspires me in a way that I have not been before," Banda said.
"There is a gap between what's possible and what has been done that we aim to fill. The system has effectively given up on millions of patients because their syndromes have long been thought to be too complex to take on. Still, we know they are actually tractable molecular problems we can solve with the right therapeutic targets," Mumm said.
About ChronicleBio
Founded in 2025, by Rohit Gupta, Fidji Simo and Rishi Reddy, ChronicleBio is a biotechnology company that uses multi-omics data, and artificial intelligence to understand complex chronic diseases better. The company combines biobanking, computational biology, and translational research to identify the underlying biological causes of disease and group patients based on these mechanisms. This approach supports the development of more precise diagnostics, and treatments for neuroimmune conditions.
