Japanese Pharmaceutical Company Shionogi to Acquire US drugmaker IntraBio for $2B

Oct 5, 2026 | By Kuldeep Jangid

Shionogi & Co., Ltd. has agreed to acquire IntraBio Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing and commercializing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

SUMMARY

  • Shionogi will acquire IntraBio for $2B.
  • The deal will add AQNEURSA and rare disease expertise.
  • IntraBio develops treatments for rare diseases.

The agreement was approved by Shionogis Board of Directors on October 5, 2026. Under the deal, IntraBio will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Shionogi Inc., Shionogi’s New Jersey-based subsidiary.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions. It will add AQNEURSA® and IntraBio’s rare disease expertise to Shionogi’s growing portfolio.

AQNEURSA was approved by the U.S. FDA in September 2024 to treat neurological symptoms of Niemann-Pick disease Type C (NPC) in adults and children. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved it in January 2026.

The FDA also approved AQNEURSA on September 18, 2026, to treat ataxia in adults and children with Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T). The treatment is currently under review by the EMA for A-T patients.

IntraBio’s expertise in rare diseases will strengthen Shionogi’s pipeline, including programs for Pompe disease, Fragile X syndrome and Jordan’s syndrome, along with other early-stage neurodegenerative disease programs.

With the expanded portfolio and expertise, Shionogi plans to speed up the development of new treatment options for people living with rare diseases.

The planned acquisition of IntraBio, which develops treatments for rare neurodegenerative and genetic neurological diseases, will strengthen Shionogi’s capabilities in this area. The deal will also add its approved treatment, AQNEURSA, to Shionogi’s portfolio.

After the acquisition is completed, Shionogi will be better positioned to support healthcare professionals and provide AQNEURSA to patients who may benefit from the treatment.

“We look forward to bringing AQNEURSA to Shionogi as part of our expanding rare disease presence in the U.S., Europe and around the world. This milestone gives us the opportunity to build on the meaningful foundation IntraBio has established with the Niemann-Pick Type C community and to deliver the first and only therapy for Ataxia-Telangiectasia to a community that has lived for many years without options to treat the diverse and debilitating symptoms caused by this disorder,” said Nathan McCutcheon, President and CEO, Shionogi Inc.

"The planned acquisition of IntraBio actively demonstrates Shionogi's solid commitment to building a leading global rare disease business," said Isao Teshirogi, Ph.D., CEO of Shionogi. "Shionogi has a strong record of delivering innovative medicines for challenging infectious diseases, and we are applying that same focus and determination to rare diseases.
