Somite, an AI developer for stem cell biology secures $5.3million in pre-seed funding. TechAviv led the funding round, with participation from Lerer Hippeau, Trust Ventures, Next Coast Ventures, and Texas Venture Partners.

The profits will be put towards the company’s ongoing development of its own AlphaStem artificial intelligence platform. Under the direction of CEO Micha Breakstone,it is creating AI foundation models to generate human tissue for cell treatments at scale for conditions like muscular dystrophies, diabetes, and obesity.

By creating vast amounts of data that enhance the platform and facilitate the development of new cell therapies with wider applicability, its AI platform, AlphaStem, empowers the creation of therapies.

The business produces cells from somites, which are essential embryonic structures that give rise to musculoskeletal cells, in an effective manner. These consist of bone, tendon, muscle, brown adipose tissue, and dermis.

By utilising this knowledge, Somite is leading the way in the creation of a computational model that replicates the growth and behaviour of a genuine embryo, or a “digital twin.”

With the use of data-rich sources like scRNA-Seq, scATAC-seq, and gene expression databases, artificial intelligence can quickly discover novel protocols, pinpoint cell differentiation regulators, and carry out optimisation cycles thanks to the digital twin.
