ME-based biochar producer Standard Biocarbon secures $5M in funding from Nexus Development Capital. With the help of the funds, the business will be able to boost operations at its Enfield, Maine plant in order to satisfy the rising demand for biochar and carbon capture.

ME-based biochar producer Standard Biocarbon secures $5M in funding from Nexus Development Capital. With the help of the funds, the business will be able to boost operations at its Enfield, Maine plant in order to satisfy the rising demand for biochar and carbon capture.

Standard is expected to produce 16,000 cubic yards of high-quality biochar annually and trap 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Production is scheduled to begin in Q1 2024.

In 2020, Fred and Tom Horton, two seasoned sustainability entrepreneurs, founded Standard Biocarbon, which aims to establish a commercial biochar manufacturing facility in North America that is scalable. A substance that resembles charcoal called biochar is created by heating organic matter to a very high temperature in an atmosphere with little oxygen.

After then, the carbon can be retained in the biochar for thousands of years. Biochar is one of the most rapid and economically viable methods of removing carbon from the atmosphere since it emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere once it is reinserted.

Apart from its several established uses in agriculture, biochar finds application in hazardous waste remediation, stormwater management, and the manufacturing of low-carbon cement, pavement, and polymers.
