Stripe agreed to acquire AI startup OpenRouter for over $7 billion

Aug 17, 2026 | By Devin Jacobs

Stripe has reached an agreement to acquire OpenRouter Inc., an AI startup that helps companies access and switch between different artificial intelligence models, for more than $7 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

The deal comes only months after OpenRouter raised funding at a reported valuation of around $1.3 billion. The acquisition highlights the growing demand among businesses for affordable and efficient AI solutions. It could also strengthen Stripe’s position in the rapidly growing AI industry.

The final value of the deal could change, as discussions are still private. Stripe said it does not comment on rumours or speculation, while OpenRouter declined to comment.

What Does OpenRouter Do?

Founded in 2023, New York-based OpenRouter gives developers access to more than 400 AI models. Its platform helps users choose the model that offers the best combination of cost, performance and efficiency for a particular task.

The company has attracted investments from major venture capital firms, including CapitalG, Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures. OpenRouter has raised more than $150 million so far.

In May, OpenRouter said its platform was being used by around 8 million developers.

Rising Demand for Lower-Cost AI

OpenRouter’s growth comes as companies increasingly focus on the cost of running AI applications.

While companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic are known for highly capable AI models, several Chinese AI companies offer lower-cost alternatives that can meet the needs of many businesses.

OpenRouter allows developers to test and use different models while building AI agents and other software. The platform also provides backup options when an AI model becomes unavailable and gives companies insights into which models are being widely used.

OpenRouter CEO’s Background

OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah previously co-founded OpenSea, a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace.

OpenSea raised more than $400 million but later saw a major decline in usage. Atallah left the company in July 2022 and founded OpenRouter less than a year later.

If completed, the acquisition would mark a major expansion of Stripe’s presence in the AI ecosystem.
