Alcoa Corporation announced a $65 million investment to expand production at its Mosjøen smelter in Norway by adding recycled materials to the casting process.
The investment will help Alcoa Corporation produce more low-carbon aluminum products that customers want, while also allowing the company to use recycled aluminum from consumers in its products for the first time.
Since 2020, Alcoa Corporation has invested about $180 million in projects at its Mosjøen smelter. The new $65 million investment will expand, and modernize the facility’s casthouse, increasing production capacity by up to 75,000 metric tons.
The investment shows how Alcoa Corporation is responding to growing customer demand for recycled aluminum products, especially in the automotive and packaging industries, while strengthening its position in the European market.
The upgrade will add a new casting line, melting furnaces, and other improvements at the Mosjøen facility to increase production capacity. It will also allow the company to produce a wider range of alloy products with different ingot sizes, more alloy options, and higher recycled content.
Mosjøen is one of the largest industrial employers in Northern Norway, with more than 700 employees and a strong impact on the local economy. The investment will help support long-term jobs, business activity, and expertise in the Helgeland region, while also benefiting local suppliers and Norway’s industrial sector. As part of the European aluminum supply chain, the Mosjøen facility plays an important role in supplying materials to the European market.

“This investment places Alcoa at the forefront of delivering low-carbon aluminum while creating long term value for our customers and shareholders,” said Alcoa President and CEO William F. Oplinger. “The increased capacity, combined with recycling capabilities, positions Mosjøen as a cornerstone of low carbon aluminum supply across Europe.”
