California Attorney General Rob Bonta is expected to ask Paramount to sell some of its cable channels and keep its movie studio separate from Warner Bros. before approving their merger, according to The Wall Street Journal.

SUMMARY

  • California may ask Paramount to sell some cable channels.
  • The $110B deal would merge Paramount and Warner Bros.
  • Critics say it could reduce competition.

Paramount and California officials are expected to meet Monday to discuss possible ways to resolve the state's antitrust lawsuit.

Lawyers from both sides met Friday to prepare the agenda for Monday's meeting, including talks about Paramount's cable and movie businesses, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery, and the California Attorney General's office did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

Last month, California and 11 other states sued to block Paramount's $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. They argued the deal could reduce competition in movie distribution and cable TV.

The states also said the merger could hurt theaters and TV distributors, raise prices for consumers, and reduce competition for workers' wages.

Paramount has said the deal would allow it to produce more content, not less. CEO David Ellison has also said the combined film studios would release 30 movies a year.
