It then manages the veterinary clinical development, manufacturing and regulatory work required to seek approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Developing a new animal drug can typically take seven to ten years. Familiar aims to shorten this timeline by building on years of existing human research.

How Much Funding Has Familiar Therapeutics Raised?
Familiar Therapeutics has raised $5 million in its seed funding round.
The company was founded in 2026, and the announcement does not provide details of any previous funding rounds.
Who Invested in Familiar Therapeutics’ Seed Round?
Pioneer Fund, Icehouse Ventures and BreakTHRU led the $5 million seed funding round.
Angel investors also participated. The company did not disclose individual angel investor names.
Why the Funding Matters
Familiar Therapeutics will use the new funding to advance its lead drug programmes into clinical studies and continue developing its wider pipeline.
One of its main programmes, FAM-010, targets hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer in dogs for which the company says there is no FDA-approved treatment. Familiar is preparing a pilot study at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, led by Timothy M. Fan, DVM, PhD.
The company's other lead programmes focus on intervertebral disc disease, breathing disorders in flat-faced dog breeds and immune-mediated diseases.
Who founded Familiar Therapeutics?
Familiar Therapeutics was founded in 2026 by Elizabeth Iorns and Dan Knox.
The company is headquartered in Redwood City, California.
"Our goal is to give vets proven, FDA-approved treatments that change the course of serious diseases in dogs and cats, where today they often have very few options," said Elizabeth Iorns, co-founder and CEO of Familiar. "The science is often already there, and when you begin with a drug that already has years of human research behind it, the veterinary work can move much faster.
"The science flows both ways," said Dan Knox, co-founder and COO of Familiar. "When we develop a drug for dogs and cats with naturally occurring disease, the evidence we generate can also inform and de-risk our biopharma partners' human programs. Those partners keep their human rights and share in veterinary sales, so they earn a faster return on research they've already paid for.
Market and Business Growth
Within five months of its founding, Familiar Therapeutics had developed a pipeline comprising four lead programmes and nine earlier-stage programmes for dogs and cats.
The company has signed multiple partnership and licensing agreements with biopharmaceutical companies. It has also opened two Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD) files with the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine and filed one provisional patent.
Its lead programme, FAM-010, focuses on hemangiosarcoma. According to the company, median survival for dogs treated with surgery alone is less than two months.
What Happens Next?
Familiar Therapeutics plans to move its leading programmes into clinical studies and advance the rest of its pipeline.
The company is working towards a pilot study of FAM-010 at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. It will also continue collaborating with pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners to develop treatments for dogs and cats using existing human drug research.
