Kinomatic Raises $4M in Seed Funding Led by Waterline Ventures

Kinomatic, an Arroyo Grande, CA-based company that specializes in AI- and VR-driven orthopedic surgery planning and concierge recovery, has raised $4 million in a Seed funding round led by Waterline Ventures.

The company plans to use the funds to open a new office and keep building its AI-powered surgical planning platform.

Kinomatic’s AI-powered platform supports the full surgical journey with four main capabilities. It includes custom 3D modeling for each patient, VR-based surgical simulation for procedure rehearsal, post-operative recovery support, and long-term outcomes tracking with concierge-level care.

Additionally, Dr. Andrew B. Wickline, MD, FAAOS, is joining Kinomatic as Chief Medical Officer. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon known for developing advanced, patient-focused approaches that help speed up post-operative recovery.

He also created March2aMillion, a nonprofit aimed at reducing opioid dependency in orthopedic surgery through education, surgeon participation, and advocacy. At Kinomatic, Dr. Wickline will work on improving recovery protocols by introducing a new, state-of-the-art program based on his research in recovery optimization.

For decades, orthopedic surgery has used standard alignment guidelines that are applied the same way to all patients. This approach does not account for each patient’s unique biomechanics, which can limit recovery and overall outcomes.

While surgical techniques and implant technology have improved, the post-operative experience has remained largely unchanged, leaving patients to manage recovery on their own. By combining AI-powered surgical planning with VR-based simulations, Kinomatic helps surgeons operate more efficiently and accurately, improves implant sizing, and supports faster functional recovery after surgery.

The platform analyzes over 2 million data points from more than 1,000 measurements per patient to choose the best fit from over 30,000 possible implant options. This detailed approach enables a level of biomechanical precision that standard 2D planning and one-size-fits-all methods cannot achieve.

“For too long, recovery has been the forgotten phase of joint replacement. Patients are left to navigate the hardest part of the procedure largely on their own, often with a bottle of opioids as their only tool,” said Dr. Wickline. “What Kinomatic has built changes that equation entirely. By combining precision pre-operative planning with a concierge recovery model built around a patient's unique anatomy and biology, we can begin to close the gap between a great surgery and a great outcome.”

“Total hip and knee replacements are among the fastest-growing surgical categories in the country. Kinomatic focuses on improving recovery outcomes for patients and surgeons. Kinomatic’s platform is built around the patient, providing data and tools that were previously unavailable to their surgeon. The company has partnered with leading surgeons around the country, and is well-positioned for growth within this market,” said Robbie Greenglass, Managing Partner at Waterline Ventures.

“Kinomatic is uniting technology and unparalleled patient care to deliver a new gold standard, where every aspect of surgery is optimized, with the goal of a knee or hip that feels so natural that patients forget they ever had surgery,” said Shaun Lea, CEO of Kinomatic. “Patients expect more than just ‘good enough’ from their care. Longevity is no longer a fringe concept, and patients having these surgeries are thinking ahead to what the next 20 to 30 years look like.”
