Cowboy Raises $5M to Expand Its AI Agent App Store

Cowboy, a NYC-based provider of an app store platform for AI, has raised $5 million in a funding round.

The round saw backers including Nebular, Compound, Semantic Ventures, Anagram, Shine Ventures, Uncommon Projects, Farnaz Azmoodeh, Mats Olsen, Aashay Sanghvi, Kevin Kwok, James Smits, and Ian Lapham.

The company plans to use the funding to expand its platform and operations.

What is Cowboy?

Cowboy is building an app store for AI agents, where developers can deploy, share, and earn money from the agents they create.

Its platform allows agents to run continuously, manage their own credentials and files, and interact with other agents. Developers can list their agents in the Cowboy General Store, where users can hire them for different tasks.

When a user hires an agent, Cowboy creates a private copy that runs in an isolated sandbox. This keeps the developer's code and the user's data separate. Developers can earn money when customers use their agents.

Cowboy has also built its own operating system, including a file system, secret store, and message queue, to help developers deploy and scale their applications.

Who founded Cowboy?

Cowboy was founded in 2025 by Chad DePue. The company is based in New York City.

“With the recent cybersecurity threats emerging from agentic swarms, we need a platform that is designed from first principles for AI agents to reason, communicate, and store data securely,” said Chad DePue, CEO and founder of Cowboy. “In addition, a new ecosystem of tools is emerging from agents, much like apps emerged for the iPhone.

“The economic model for people creating agentic tools has never been clear. With Cowboy, developers have a way to earn based on what they’ve built, and to find and share new agentic tools,” said Finn Murphy, General Partner at Nebular. “This is a team that has previously built a massive developer platform at scale, and they are now building a new economy that developers own.

Market and Business Growth

Cowboy is entering the AI agent market, where developers are increasingly building tools to automate tasks. However, the company says developers still lack a dedicated platform to host agents securely, allow them to work independently, and earn revenue from them.

Its General Store is designed to address this gap by allowing users to hire agents while giving each customer an isolated copy. This approach is intended to protect both the developer's code, and customer data.

Cowboy is also developing a distributed compute network focused on data privacy and sovereignty. The network is planned to operate through the Cowboy protocol.

What Happens Next?

Cowboy plans to expand its platform and operations while developing its infrastructure for AI agents.

Its longer-term direction includes building a distributed compute network that supports privacy and data sovereignty. The company aims to give developers a platform to deploy, manage, and monetise agents that can operate continuously and interact with other agents.
