Expo Raises $45M in Series B Funding

Apr 17, 2026 | By Startuprise io

Expo, a San Francisco, CA-based provider of an open-source platform that empowers React Native development, has raised $45 million in a Series B funding round led by Leadout Capital, A.Capital Ventures and Red Swan Ventures.

The company plans to use the funds to support the launch of Expo Agent. This mobile expert tool helps enterprise teams, such as embedded solutions engineers, and brings in Seth Webster as Chief Developer Evangelist.

Expo powers apps used by hundreds of millions of people, including companies like Phantom, Pizza Hut, MTA, and PrizePicks. With millions of weekly downloads and a large developer community, it helps teams build high quality apps with less complexity. With the launch of Expo Agent, developers can turn ideas into fully working mobile apps in minutes without complex setup or deep native expertise, while maintaining production level reliability.

Mobile apps generate over $500B in revenue each year, but the tools used to build them are often fragmented and complex, according to Business of Apps. Expo was founded in 2015 by early Facebook engineers and Quora co-founder Charlie Cheever, along with James Ide, to simplify building apps for iOS, Android, and the web. Its goal is to provide developers with everything they need to build applications in one place.

Expo Agent is designed to help humans and AI build production-ready mobile apps together. It can set up projects, fix complex issues, suggest deployment setups, and catch problems early, working like a forward-deployed engineer for mobile development.

To support its growth and strengthen its position as the main platform from idea to production, Expo has appointed Seth Webster as Chief Developer Evangelist. He will help promote the platform in an AI-driven development world, increase adoption among startups and enterprises, and build partnerships with key industry players. He will also work with product and engineering teams to ensure the platform meets long-term developer and ecosystem needs.

"MTA’s Head of Digital, Will Fisher, said Expo has supported their digital services team for over five years, and they are now building a new Subway and Bus app on the platform. He said their team serves 3 million daily riders with real-time updates across multiple transit systems. He added that Expo allows them to quickly fix issues and deploy updates in under 90 seconds, making it a reliable technology partner for large scale operations."

"The problem with agentic app development is that business-critical apps are not making it to production," said Charlie Cheever, co-founder of Expo. "That is the problem we are positioned to solve at Expo. We built the infrastructure for mobile apps, and we can bake it into Expo Agent. Our mission is to give every builder — whether they're a solo founder, an enterprise team, or someone working alongside AI agents — the infrastructure to ship production-grade apps that scale and succeed."

"We're at a moment where the React Native ecosystem is expanding faster than ever, fueled by AI assisted development, new enterprise entrants and a global community pushing the boundaries of what's possible on mobile," said Seth. "From solo builders to enterprise teams scaling for millions of users, my focus is on making sure that every developer who picks up Expo finds a platform that meets them where they are and grows with them. Expo has earned deep trust in this community. This role is about widening that path and making sure the best infrastructure for mobile is also the most accessible."

"Expo has reached an inflection point, evolving from a popular open-source framework into an increasingly important infrastructure layer for cross-platform app development," said Emily Walsh, Lead Investor at Georgian. "By collapsing the fragmented mobile toolchain and capitalizing on the surge of AI-assisted coding, we believe Expo is democratizing how applications are built and maintained at scale. We have been inspired by the team's decade long commitment to the developer experience, and we are proud to partner with them as they work to make app development more accessible and reliable for enterprises and developers."
