Sonilo Partners with Shutterstock to Build the Gold Standard

May 12, 2026 | By Startuprise io

Sonilo, a video-to-music AI platform, announced a strategic partnership with Shutterstock, one of the world’s largest providers of licensed creative content.

This partnership adds to the recent growth of Sonilo. Earlier this month, the company launched the feature as part of ComfyUI, an open-source AI workflow platform used by more than 4 million creators. Sonilo is also available through an API that can be integrated into video tools, creator platforms, game engines, and AI systems. The platform offers Free, Pro, and Premium plans, with more integrations planned later this year.

Through the partnership, Sonilo has licensed Shutterstock’s music catalog to train its AI models, marking Shutterstock’s first partnership with a video-to-music AI platform. Sonilo is based in San Francisco and is backed by B Capital, a venture capital firm focused on global technology startups.

The AI music industry is facing growing legal and quality concerns. By 2025, copyright infringement lawsuits against AI companies had increased sharply. Many AI music platforms have been criticized for training their systems on unlicensed content, and dealing with legal issues afterward, leading to copyright concerns, and a large amount of low quality AI generated music online.

Sonilo was created to solve these challenges. Using its Sonilo v1.0 AI model, the platform analyzes videos directly instead of relying on text prompts. It analyzes the video’s pacing, structure and emotion to create an original soundtrack that matches the content automatically. The music is production ready and cleared for commercial use without requiring extra licenses.

Unlike many Artificial Intelligence (AI) music platform's that have faced criticism for using copyrighted material without permission, Sonilo say's it focuses on licensed content and fair compensation for artists. It's partnership with Shutterstock reflects the companys goal of combining Artificial Intelligence AI innovation with proper licensing and support for creators.

"Music has always been the last unsolved layer of video creation, and video has always carried its own soundtrack," said Shawn Song, CEO, Sonilo. "We built Sonilo to hear it and compose from it, without a single text prompt. But how we build matters as much as what we build. While others have chosen to take artists' work without permission and charge creators for the privilege, we've chosen a different path—one where artists are compensated from day one. Partnering with Shutterstock reflects that standard. Every model we train meets a bar the music industry can stand behind, because the most innovative AI platforms don't have to come at the expense of the artists who make all of these possible."

"AI innovation depends on access to high quality rights cleared content, and trusted licensing partnerships," said Jessica April Vice President, Data Licensing and Artificial Intelligence AI Services, Shutterstock. "Sonilos approach reflects the growing demand for responsibly sourced training data, and commercially safe AI workflows. We're pleased to support companies building generative AI products with licensed content and scalable data solutions that help accelerate innovation while respecting creators and rights holders."
