Trillium Raises $13M in Series B Funding Led by HS Hyosung Advanced Materials

Trillium Renewable Chemicals, a Knoxville, TN-based bio-based chemical manufacturer, has raised $13 million in a Series B funding round led by HS Hyosung Advanced Materials with participation from Capricorn Partners. The funding comes after a previous $10.6M Series A round and a $2.5M non-dilutive grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The company plans to use the funds to develop further and build its first large-scale manufacturing plant.
Following a successful multi-year pilot program for its glycerol-to-acrylonitrile technology, Trillium selected INEOS Nitriles’ Green Lake facility to host the world’s first demonstration plant, called “Project Falcon,” for producing 100% bio-based acrylonitrile, and construction is now complete, marking the first industrial-scale use of this technology, with operations expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026 and product shipments later in the year.
After Project Falcon begins operations, Trillium will move forward with engineering and development of its first commercial-scale manufacturing plant, while working with strategic partners and customers to prepare for full commercial rollout.
Globally, more than 6 million metric tons of acrylonitrile are produced each year, mostly from fossil fuels. Still, Trillium’s process offers a plant-based alternative that can be used without changing existing supply chains. Acrylonitrile is widely used to make products like carbon fiber, plastics, textiles, synthetic rubber, and other materials used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and specialty manufacturing.

“Completion of Falcon demonstrates that Trillium’s technology is ready for industrial validation,” said Young-Joon Lee, Senior Vice President of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, Trillium’s lead Series B investor. “Accessing sustainable acrylonitrile is an important milestone for the industry, and the Project Falcon will prove that it can be scaled to produce a viable, drop-in sustainable product.”
Wouter Van de Putte from Capricorn Partners added, “The completion of Falcon substantially advances Trillium toward commercial manufacturing. The company has demonstrated both technical performance, and the ability to execute at an industrial scale.”
“Our pilot program validated the chemistry. Falcon validates scale, and manufacturability,” said Corey Tyree, CEO of Trillium Renewable Chemicals. “We are now moving from technical proof to commercial proof. This funding allows us to demonstrate that bio based acrylonitrile will meet industrial performance standards at meaningful production volumes.”
About Trillium Renewable Chemicals
Founded in 2021, by CEO Corey Tyree, Trillium develops plant based alternatives to replace oil and gas in chemical production, using its proprietary technology to convert materials like glycerol into key chemicals such as acrylonitrile, and acetonitrile, which are used in products like plastics, carbon fiber and synthetic rubber, helping meet growing global demand with a more sustainable solution.
