Electric Plant Company Secures $11.2M in Seed Funding

SUMMARY

  • Electric Plant Company raised $11.2 million in seed funding.
  • The funds will support AI development and expansion.
  • The company uses AI to monitor plant health.

Electric Plant Company, a San Francisco, CA-based provider of an AI foundation model for plant electrophysiology, has raised $11.2 million in a Seed funding round.

The round was led by Onto Ventures and Climactic, with participation from Ponderosa, Endeavor Catalyst, Ludlow, Michigan Rise, The Fund, Schox VC, and Dug Song.

The company plans to use the funding to expand crop coverage, improve its AI model, and increase deployment across commercial operations.

What is Electric Plant Company?

Electric Plant Company develops AI technology that helps people understand plant health by analysing electrical signals inside plant tissue. Its technology combines a sensor called Bud with an AI foundation model named Bombadil.

Bud attaches directly to a plant and records electrical activity linked to its physiological condition, including signs of stress. Bombadil analyses these signals and estimates seven physiological stress markers, helping users understand what a plant may need.

The technology aims to give farmers, agribusinesses, researchers, and other users real-time information about plant health. Instead of relying only on soil measurements, weather data, satellite images, or visual inspections, users can gain insights from the plant’s own electrical activity.

About Electric Plant Company

How Much Funding Has Electric Plant Company Raised?

Electric Plant Company has raised $11.2 million in its seed funding round. The company has not disclosed details of any previous funding rounds or its total funding before this investment.

Who Invested in Electric Plant Company’s Seed Round?

The $11.2 million seed round was led by Onto Ventures and Climactic.

Other participating investors included Ponderosa, Endeavor Catalyst, Ludlow, Michigan Rise, The Fund, Schox VC, and Dug Song.

Why the Funding Matters

Electric Plant Company plans to use the funding to expand the range of crops its technology can monitor, improve Bombadil’s capabilities and scale its deployment across commercial operations.

The investment will support the development of technology that helps growers identify plant stress and better understand crop conditions. By providing more direct information about plant health, the company aims to help users make better-informed decisions about plant care.

Who founded Electric Plant Company?

Electric Plant Company was founded in 2023 by Justin Mast. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

"Master gardeners spend a lifetime learning a single plot, from the soil moisture level to the way the sunlight hits a tree in a specific corner," said Justin Mast, co-founder and CEO of Electric Plant Company. “Bombadil makes that kind of intimate knowledge possible at scale, using data derived from inside the plant itself.

"Most earlier models of plant electrical signals worked for one species in one setting, so a new plant or new environment meant starting over," said James Kirk, head of AI/ML at Electric Plant Company. "Bombadil learns what is common across species, which is why it can read a plant it never saw in training.

Market and Business Growth

Electric Plant Company has trained Bombadil on more than four million hours of electrical recordings collected across 100 plant species and different environments. Since the model’s first training run, its data collection has grown to seven million hours.

The company recently released a technical whitepaper explaining how Bombadil works. The model uses a self-supervised learning approach to identify patterns in plant electrical signals without requiring labelled data for every recording.

Electric Plant Companys technology is designed to support future applications, including identifying specific plant diseases and predicting bloom timing. These capabilities could be added to the existing model rather than requiring a separate model for each task.

What Happens Next?

Electric Plant Company plans to expand crop coverage, improve its AI model, and increase deployment across commercial operations.

The company also aims to develop additional applications for Bombadil, allowing users to gain more insights into plant health and physiological conditions. Its longer-term goal is to make direct plant monitoring more accessible to growers, researchers, and other users.
