With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), GHLF is developing educational resources to help people with PMR better understand the condition, make informed treatment decisions, and manage their daily lives. The partnership with RhAPP will help make these resources available to more healthcare professionals who support PMR patients.
GHLF and RhAPP will share easy-to-understand PMR information with rheumatology advanced practice providers through conferences, newsletters, and educational sessions with local RhAPP chapters.
This partnership is important because PMR can greatly affect a person’s quality of life, causing pain, stiffness, fatigue, and difficulty with everyday activities. Easy-to-understand information can help patients better understand their condition, have informed discussions with their doctors, and take a more active role in managing their care.
“PMR can be confusing and isolating, especially for patients who don't know where to turn for reliable information,” said Shilpa Venkatachalam, PhD, MPH, Chief Patient Centered Research and Ethical Oversight Officer at GHLF.
"Advanced practice providers play an essential role in rheumatology care, serving as trusted partners in diagnosing, guiding treatment, educating patients and providing ongoing support critical to managing conditions such as PMR. At RhAPP, we believe that exceptional rheumatology care extends beyond making the right diagnosis or prescribing the right treatment, it also means ensuring patients have the knowledge and confidence to actively participate in their care.
