Pathfinder, a Phoenix, AZ-based provider of a fintech platform supporting families in using Education Savings Account (ESA) funds, has raised $12 million in a Series A funding round, bringing the total amount to $16 million.

The round was led by Portage Ventures, with participation from Reach Capital, Gradient, and Stand Together Ventures Lab.

The company will use the funds to develop its platform, improve its products and expand beyond Arizona.

What is Pathfinder?

Pathfinder provides payment technology that helps families manage education-related spending through Education Savings Accounts. These programmes allow parents to use public funds for approved educational expenses, but families often face complex eligibility rules, paperwork and delays in reimbursement.

The company addresses these challenges through the Pathfinder Education Visa Charge Card and a companion app. Its AI powered technology provides real-time guidance on eligible purchases, stores receipts and prepares the documentation required to validate expenses.

Pathfinder also submits reimbursement requests on behalf of families. Once the state approves a reimbursement, the amount is used to pay down the family's card balance.

The platform is designed to reduce administrative work and help parents understand which educational purchases qualify under their state's programme. The Pathfinder Card is issued by Column, N.A., which provides funding for card balances with capacity to scale to $100 million.

Who founded Pathfinder?

Pathfinder was founded in 2024 by Amaan Ahmad, and Sidharth Jain. The company is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.

It began its operations in Arizona, focusing on the state's Empowerment Scholarship Account programme.

Co-founders Amaan Ahmad and Sidharth Jain started their journey in school choice by running their own microschool together in London, where they learned firsthand about the challenges with the existing infrastructure. “Arizona is the vanguard for education choice, and we are confident this model can be adapted to other states seamlessly,” said Amaan Ahmad, CEO and co-founder of Pathfinder.

Market and Business Growth

Pathfinder launched in Arizona in March and has since grown to serve more than 8,000 accounts in the state's ESA programme. The company reports approximately twofold month-over-month growth, driven largely by word of mouth.

Arizona was selected as the company's first market because its ESA programme is one of the largest and most established in the US, serving more than 108,000 students.

Pathfinder is also preparing for changes in the education funding market. An estimated $26 billion a year in federal tax-credit scholarships is expected to begin rolling out in January 2027 in participating states. New rules are also opening more than $600 billion in 529 plans for K-12 education expenses.

What Happens Next?

Pathfinder plans to expand beyond Arizona and continue developing its payment and technology platform. It aims to support families as more states introduce ESA programmes and additional education funding options become available.

The company intends to bring different education funding programmes into a single platform, helping parents manage payments, eligibility checks and reimbursement requests.
