Orbital raises $5M in pre-seed funding to build AI data centres in orbit

Orbital, a Los Angeles, CA-based space infrastructure company building AI data centers in Low Earth Orbit, has raised $5 million in Pre-Seed funding round led by a16z speedrun.
The round also saw participation from Basis Set, Human Element, Wayfinder, Antler, Anti Fund, Ascent, Rubik, Zero Knowledge Ventures, LYVC, Feld Ventures, New Legacy, FNDR, UpHonest and Asterisk.
The company plans to use the funds to grow its operations and strengthen its product development work.
"The sun is the most abundant and accessible source of energy in the universe, yet we've barely begun to tap into it," said Euwyn Poon, Founder and CEO of Orbital. "Orbital is turning that energy directly into intelligence. We're building AI data centers in orbit, where solar power is continuous and heat dissipates into the void of space. Advances in launch infrastructure are making this an imminent reality, not science fiction. This infrastructure will power intelligence for the planet."
About Orbital
Orbital, led by CEO and founder Euwyn Poon, is building space-based infrastructure for AI data centers in low Earth orbit. Instead of large orbital structures, the company uses a distributed system of many small satellites that work together as a constellation to provide computing power in space.
Its first mission, called Pathfinder, is planned for 2027 and will launch a hosted GPU payload on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare mission. This test will evaluate how GPUs perform in space including radiation resistance, thermal behavior, and data transmission back to Earth. After that, Orbital plans to launch Orbital-1, its first fully purpose-built satellite for orbital computing.
